This page has been set up to relay all news concerning the advancement and networking of Golf Course Assistants in the Louisiana and Mississippi region. David Leon from The Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison, MS is our new Assistant Superintendent Board Member. David will begin the task of creating interest and involvement on the assistant’s level. His short-term goals will be to encourage more assistant membership enrollment and fellowship.David will be organizing a golf outing combined with an educational opportunity ASAP. You can contact David at: davidleon44@yahoo.com The Spotlight’s On David is 2nd Assistant Superintendent at Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison, MS. A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, he is a 2006 graduate of the Golf & Sports Turf Management Program at Mississippi State University. His career in “turf management” began in his teens when his father started a spraying business after having farmed for 30 years. “When I graduated from high school, I decided I didn’t want to work for my father any more”, David said, but decided soon enough that being outside working with turf was where he should be. “I can’t ever repay him for giving me a strong and disciplined work ethic.” David’s first job in the golf profession was at Clear Creek Country Club in Vicksburg. “We rebuilt nine holes that summer, and even though it was a low budget course, I was able to see first hand how important the grow in stage is.” He credits professional mentors, Will Wilburn at Shoal Creek for showing him the rewards of having an intense work ethic and Josh Owens at Reunion G &CC for helping him hone his skills for the next level. When asked what he enjoys most about his job, David said, “I enjoy being able to see the rewards of our labor on the golf course,” and what he dislikes the most, “I would say the amount of time we spend on the golf course is the only downfall. It’s hard sometimes not being able to spend time with your family and friends.” Bo Weekley is his favorite pro golfer and his “fantasy foursome” would include himself, his brother, grandfather and Sean Connery! If he had to describe himself in three words or less, David would say that he is “deliberate, organized and loyal”--great traits for all of us! Outside of golf David enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors with friends. As the representative for assistants on the board, David will be busy organizing outings; educational programs to help all assistants become more involved.
